How to Half Double Crochet (Step-by-Step)
Follow these simple steps to make a half double crochet stitch.
Step 1: Make a Foundation Chain
Start by making a slip knot.
Now Chain 20 stitches.
Great job!
This will be your practice swatch.
Now we'll make half double crochet Rows on this foundation chain.
For Row 1, we will add 2 more chains as turning chains equals the height of half double crochet stitch. Total 22 Chains.
✨ Step 2: Yarn Over (The New Move)
Yarn over your hook once.
This is the first step of half double crochet.
This is what makes Half Double Crochet taller than single crochet.
Remember this move — you’ll use it in MANY stitches later.
Step 3: Insert Hook
Insert your hook into the 3rd chain from hook.
Why skip 2 chains? Because Half Double Crochet needs extra height to stand up properly.
You should now have 3 loops on your hook.
Step 4: Yarn Over Again & Pull up a Loop
Yarn over again and pull yarn through the chain stitch.
You should now have 3 loops on the hook.
This is correct!
Step 5: Complete Half Double Crochet
Yarn over one more time.
Now pull yarn through ALL 3 LOOPS at once.
You just made one half double crochet stitch.
Congratulations!
🧠Memory Tip (Very Important)
And THAT is your First Half Double Crochet.
Repeat after me:
Yarn over → Insert → Pull up loop → Yarn over → Pull through all 3.
This rhythm will become muscle memory fast.
Continue Half Double Crochet for Row 1
Let’s continue across the chain.
For every stitch:
• Yarn over
• Insert hook into next chain
• Pull up loop (3 loops on hook)
• Yarn over
• Pull through all 3 loops
Repeat until the end of the Row.
You should have total 20 Half Double Crochet stitches after completing Row 1.
You should be slow and relaxed during crocheting.
Count your stitches at the end of each Row so that you don't make any mistake.
Start Row 2
Make 2 Chains and
Turn your work.
This chain gives height for the next row.
Now we crochet into the stitches (not chains anymore).
Find the top 'V' loops of the stitch.
Insert hook under BOTH loops.
REPEAT the same Half Double Crochet steps across the Row 2.
First: Yarn over → Insert the hook into the stitch→ Yarn over → Pull up a loop through the stitch → Yarn over → Pull through all 3 loops.
Repeat for the entire Row.
Continue Rows to practice.
