Steps to Make Single Crochet Stitch

Foundation Chain

Now, are you ready with your 15 - 20 chains?

- Make a slip knot and Let’s crochet the chain first.

Follow the previous class, so that you can get a detailed outlook on - how to make a slip knot and crochet chain stitch.

I made 20 chain stitches.

To make our first row of single crochet, add more 1 chain, called as turning chain.

So, now total 21 chain stitches.

Row 1 -

Look closely at your chain.

You’ll see little "V" shapes.

Each "V" is a chain stitch.

Insert your hook into the second chain ("V") from the hook.

This is where your first single crochet goes.

For beginners, we insert the hook under the top V strands.

This is the easiest method.

Skip the first chain closest to your hook.

Here are the 4 steps.

We repeat these forever in crochet.

Step 1 — Insert hook into the chain

Step 2 — Yarn over

Step 3 — Pull up a loop

now 2 loops on the hook.

Step 4 — Yarn over and pull through BOTH loops.

And you just made your FIRST single crochet stitch.

Let’s do it again slowly:

Insert hook into the next chain stitch.

Yarn over and pull up a loop.

You now have TWO loops on the hook.

Yarn over and pull through both loops.

That’s the entire single crochet stitch.

REPEAT this in the next chain.

Continue making 1 single crochet in every chain across.

Slow and relaxed.

When you reach the end, count your stitches.

You should have the same number of stitches as your chains minus one.

That is 20 stitches.

You can watch carefully in the video tutorial - how I am holding the yarn and chain and crocheting the stitches.

Be gentle and slow with your stitches. Sometimes it gets stuck.

Now, we are at the end of our Row 1.

You just finished your first crochet row!!

Total 20 stitches.

Row 2

Make 1 Chain - This is called the turning chain.

Insert your hook under BOTH top loops of the first stitch.

And repeat the single crochet steps again:

[Insert → yarn over → pull up loop

Yarn over → pull through two loops.]

Keep going across.

You are now crocheting rows.

This is how scarves, blankets, headbands, and sweaters begin.

You are officially crocheting fabric.

Important Tips:

Your rectangle may curl.

Your edges may look messy.

Your stitches may be uneven.

That means you’re doing it right.

Every crocheter in the world started with this exact rectangle.

Keep practicing rows for 10 minutes and watch your hands learn the motion.

At the end of the Row 2 -

Total 20 stitches.

To make the crochet fabric, just REPEAT the Row 2.

This is fun !

We have crocheted 8 Rows for this fabric.

This is your first crochet fabric.

If you want, you can do more.

Beginners Tips:

i. If your hook feels stuck, your stitches are too tight - hold your yarn slightly loose.

ii. If your stitches look giant and loose, pull your yarn slightly tighter.

There is no perfect tension yet — practice builds it.

iii. Careful with your stitches at the end of every row.

Most of the mistakes happen here only.

So, count your stitches at each row.

iv. Be careful, - most of the crochet mistakes happen at the starting points.

In next class, we’ll learn the half double crochet stitch, which makes projects grow faster and look fluffier.
